The Baia Mare Planetarium was inaugurated on July 1, 1969, in Baia Mare, being the first public planetarium in Romania and the only one in Transylvania. Although the construction program of the building was to take place between 1967-1970, the reception for the planetarium was made only in the summer of 1969, and that for the second stage in 1973. It belonged until January 1991 to the Baia Mare town hall. Starting this month, by a decision of the "Inspectorate for Culture" and with the consent of the city hall, the astronomical complex was transferred to the Maramureş County Museum.
